Algeria has recalled its Spanish ambassador in protest over an announcement made last week by the Government to support a Moroccan plan for a disputed former Spanish colony.
The Government announced their support for the plan from Morocco for the Western Sahara, an area of land which is part of a decades-old conflict between them and the Polisario Front.
Foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares backed a 2007 proposal by Morocco to offer Western Sahara autonomy under its sovereignty, in a move from it’s previous neutral position.
Last year, Morocco recalled its ambassador to protest Madrid’s decision to allow the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, to undergo treatment for Covid-19 in Northern Spain.
