The body of a 73-year-old woman has been found dead in a house in Torrevieja. Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing a strong smell coming from the property. Fire-fighters entered the house wearing biological protection suits and upon entry discovered the decomposing body.
It is believed the woman suffered from Diogenes syndrome, a behavioural disorder which leads to people living in extreme squalor and neglecting themselves. This is usually accompanied by self-imposed isolation, the refusal of help, and a tendency to hoarding belongings and rubbish.
