The Supreme Court in Catalonia has said it has opened proceedings against the Catalan parliamentary speaker Laura Borràs on suspicion of corruption.
Investigations centre on the awarding of contracts whilst head of the regions litererary insititute – Institució de les Lletres Catalanes.
According to court papers, 18 contracts awarded during her tenure as the head of the insitute are under scruitiny, to determine if she abused her position of power.
In March she appealed a preliminary trial, stating that her right to defend her position had been violated.
Should she be found guilty, she could lose her seat – and position – in the Catalan Parliament.
She firmly denies all the charges and any wrongdoing.
