The Spanish government has confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in Spain.
A 51-year-old man in the community of Madrid tested positive for the strain of the virus after arriving back in the country from a trip to South Africa.

The man was identified after undergoing screening at Madrid Barajas airport, and is currently isolating with mild symptoms.
Over the weekend the infection rate has risen significantly, with it passing 200 cases per 100,000 people. 22,911 new infections were recorded and a further 53 coronavirus related deaths were also announced.
Tomorrow will see new controls for those entering Spain from outside the EU – including the UK – with only those in possession of a valid vaccination certificate allowed entry.
