Eating habits in Spain changed during the pandemic and lockdowns, according to a report issued by Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, this week.
In 2020 the country spent 3.2% less on food, but consumed 4.4% more due to less eating out and more cooking at home.
Households allocated an additional 14.2% of their shopping budget to groceries – an additional €79bn compared to 2019 figures.
The report also shows a return to traditional Spanish dishes, as well as healthy options and an increase in consumption of fruit and vegetables.
Alongside a return to well known dishes, three course meals also became more widespread in the home, after years of single courses being the norm.
