The Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has voted to strip former Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont of their political immunity.
In a session held yesterday, the committee voted 15 in favour – 8 against, to a request issued by the Spanish Supreme Court to strip three JxCat MEPs – Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín and Clara Ponsatí – of their political protections.
The decision will now proceed to the full session of the European Parliament, which is due to sit on the 8th March. Should the Parliament vote to approve the proposal the three could face extradition to Spain to stand trial for their involvement in the disputed independence referendum and declaration of 2017.
