The Ministry of the Interior has issued a high alert for forest fires across mainland Spain which is expected to remain in place until tomorrow, due to the current heatwave on the Iberian peninsular.
Yesterday over 500 people were evacuated from their homes following a forest fire which broke out in the Madrid town of Collado Mediano.
Around 50 hectares of forest has been destroyed in the blaze, which remains out of control.
A seperate fire in Extremadura also is causing widespread damage, with nearly 3,000 hectares of land destroyed. The cause of the fire is understood to be a lightning strike hitting tinderbox dry woodland.
