Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced the largest aid package to an individual country in Spanish history, as €23 million has been earmarked for humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
During the weekend’s Conference of Presidents on the island of La Palma, the Prime Minister also announced the funding for regional governments as it prepares to home those fleeing the Russian invasion of the eastern European country. Along with regional assistance, tax cuts for sectors affected by the war have also been announced.
Regional leaders have signed the “Declaration of La Palma” – calling for further action over energy prices, coordination across political parties over reception of refugess from Ukraine and creating a “National Response Plan” to handle the economic impact of the war.
It was the first time in ten years that all regional presidents were in attendance. The Catalan regional president has not been present since 2012.
In a press conference, it was also announced that a fourth reception centre is being considered in Malaga, after centres opened in Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante.
