Heatwave conditions are expected to continue into this week, with amber and yellow weather warnings issued for high temperatures over the next few days.
In their latest update, meteorological agency Aemet has forecast peak temperatures of 41ºC in places, with much of the mainland of Spain expected to see temperatures into the high thirties.
In a press conference at the weekend, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called on workers in the public and private sector to stop wearing ties in an attempt to help people remain cool.
The government has said it will outline urgent energy saving measures today as it grapples hot weather and energy supply concerns due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
