The wettest spring on record in the Valencian Community, the high summer temperatures and the delay in harvesting fruit caused by the economic situation have caused a general decline in citrus fruit across the province of Alicante. Verna lemons are the most adversely affected with a 50 percent reduction in production and late oranges have dropped by 30 percent. Overall, the citrus harvest is at a loss of one million tons in production at the national level.
