An education minister showed off his Disney knowledge as he made a light-hearted reference to the children’s film Frozen during a speech in the House of Commons.
As he closed a Labour-led debate on children’s recovery and the cost of childcare, Will Quince wished the daughter of Conservative MP Mark Logan (Bolton North East) a happy birthday as he compared her to Princess Elsa of Arendelle, one of the protagonists of Disney’s 2013 animated feature film Frozen.
During his contributions earlier, Mr Logan had told the Commons about his daughter’s fourth birthday.
The little girl watched her dad from the public gallery wearing a tiara and a princess dress.
Mr Quince joked: “I can’t let the moment go without also saying happy birthday to my honourable friend’s daughter.
“I thought up in the gallery was Princess Elsa of Arendelle. But it turns out it was actually my honourable friend’s birthday and I’ll let it go.”
The Frozen references did not end there, though, with Labour MP Stella Creasy (Walthamstow) later intervening during Mr Quince’s speech, saying: “Obviously Frozen too has many lessons that we all need to follow.
“But one of the things about it is not just to let it go but to be truthful to yourself.”
Ms Creasy asked: “Is he saying that the Government believes the money they are currently providing fully covers the cost of providing childcare or he doesn’t think there’s a £2,000 differential between the cost of providing childcare for a three-year old and what the Government is paying?
“What does he think the gap is?”
Mr Quince said the Government is putting £5.1 billion in childcare, adding: “On the free entitled loan, the entitlement that the honourable lady references, it’s £3.5 billion.
“Now, look, I know that there is more that we need to do. And that’s why I’m working across Government to take a renewed look into the childcare system, finding ways to improve the cost and availability of childcare and early education for families across England.”
