Murcia’s Corvera airport is to change its name to ‘Aeropuerto Internacional de la Region de Murcia – Juan de la Cierva’. The region’s governing council approved the move ending months of debate and resistance.
Juan de la Cierva was the first to propose a commercial airport for the Murcia region in 1935. However, he was also involved in the plans to try and overthrow the second Spanish republic. This event led to the start of the Spanish Civil War and the rise to power of General Franco. Making the name change a controversial decision.
