A new law proposing joint custody of pets when a couple seperate are have been presented before the Congress of Deputies.
The change will pave the way for judges to declare joint custody of pets in divorce hearings just as they do with children.
It will also give pet owners the right to compensation for “moral injury” if their animal is hurt by another person.
The legislastion will bring Spain in line with France, Germany and Switzerland who have also changed their legal code to recognise domestic animals as fellow living beings.
It looks set to pass, after gaining support from most parties except for the far-right Vox party.
