Maritime rescue teams have rescued over 400 migrants who were adrift in waters off of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.

In total 409 people – including 24 children – were rescued by lifeguards in the Canaries. Nine adults and one baby had to be taken to hospital for medical treatment.
18 people are feared to have drowned over the weekend, after an inflatable boat sank around 80km from Lanzarote – making it the worst loss of life this year.
