A first of its kind operation in the country has taken place on a patient in Gran Canaria.
Surgeons performed open brain surgery whilst the patient – Gregorio Serrano – was still wide awake.
The procedure – called a craniotomy – was to remove a number of brain tumors and stop Mr. Serrano suffering epileptic fits. Whilst under the knife, surgeons asked questions to confirm they were not damaging healthy brain tissue.
Doctors have said the outcome is perfect, with the seizures no longer occurring and the tumours removed.
