Torrevieja Town Hall has fenced off 400 metres of La Mata beach, where 13 Kentish Plover chicks hatched last year, to encourage this year’s breeding programme. The beach cleaning service has also been altered to avoid disturbing the area.
The Kentish Plover nests directly in the sand and is classified as vulnerable by the regional government but the Spanish Ornithologist Society considers them a fully endangered species.
