Defence Minister Margarita Robles has said that NATO is preparing for a long war in Ukraine, after Russian plans for a quick invasion failed.

In a speech following news of an increase in funding for the Spanish military, Ms. Robles said that NATO support – in the form of humanitarian and military supplies – has helped prevent the rapid over running of the eastern European country by Russia.

She made the speech following a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Belgium, where she confirmed the governments intention to increase spending in the military.
