A row over where to house African migrants arriving by boat in the Canary Islands deepened yesterday after the mayor of the most affected town in the archipelago urged the government to transfer them out of local hotels.
Onalia Bueno, mayor of Mogán in Gran Canaria island, said the government should remove 3,471 migrants, including unaccompanied minors, from 10 hotels in her area by the year’s end.

Hoteliers currently have contracts to accommodate those who arrived illegally on the islands whilst claims for asylum are decided.
The Interior Ministry is working on returning to Africa those who are not eligible for asylum, Secretary for Migration Hana Jalloul said in a statement issued yesterday.
