With the annual San Juan celebrations just around the corner, local municipalities are taking a cautious approach. Elche has completely banned San Juan bonfires on its beaches, due to concerns over fire risk and overcrowding. Meanwhile, Santa Pola has fenced off designated areas for celebrations tomorrow evening (Thursday 23rd June). Fires and fireworks are the traditional method of marking the midsummer due to the belief that fire cleanses the old and brings new beginnings.
