
Last year saw the second highest number of deaths in Spain this century, according to data released this week by the national statistics agency – INE.
450,687 died in the country last year, a fall of 8.7% compared to 2020’s figure which came at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The total number of births last year was also the lowest on record, with 336,811 births recorded, a fall of 1.3%.
This continues the current downward trend in births which has been recorded over the last decade.
