Torrevieja Council is working alongside local water company Agamed to create a flood plain between the saltwater lagoon and Torreta Florida to combat the effects of heavy rainfall as the winter approaches. This is the first project of its kind in the municipality and will control and store high volumes of water should the lagoon start to overflow. The water will then be treated and reused.
The project also includes a pond, which as well as being a key part of the overflow system, will be planted with native trees to create a communal green space for the community.
Initially, the planned investment for this work was 1.29 million euros, but the Board of Directors of Agamed, which has a majority stake in Hidraqua, decided to raise the budget to 2.4 million, increasing the investment to carry out the project quickly and professionally.
